The Library

Knowledge for kinder choices.

Every material has a story. This is where you go to read it.

What does this choice actually do to the living world - and what changes when you choose differently?

Materials & More Library

The interactive materials database.

49 materials · 20 ecological mechanisms · 8 conservation causes

How it's built

Each material in this library is scored across 20 ecological mechanisms - not general sustainability categories, but specific physical pathways: the cargo ship noise that prevents a whale from hearing her prey, the chrome plating bath draining near a salmon river, the microplastic in the egg of a seabird that has never been near a city.

Most certifications tell you what's safe for the person inside. This library tells you what happens to the animal outside.

What most material databases miss

A material can be certified non-toxic, made with recycled content, and compliant with every green building standard available - while its extraction destroys a migration corridor, its manufacturing leaches chromium into a salmon watershed, and its end-of-life chemistry feeds the microplastic load a seabird chick hatches into.

This library traces those connections. Select a conservation cause to see every score shift around what matters most - whether that's Pacific Northwest watersheds, nocturnal wildlife disruption, or the microplastic chain that reaches from a carpet fiber to a juvenile salmon's gut.
